Mark Thomas

Mark Thomas - The editor and big chief of The Dubrovnik Times. Born in the UK he has been living and working in Dubrovnik since 1998, yes he is one of the rare “old hands.” A unique insight into both British and Croatian life and culture, Mark is often known as just “Englez” or Englishman. He is a traveller, a current affairs freak and a huge AFC Wimbledon fan.

Dubrovnik's tennis sensation, Ana Konjuh, Wimbledon adventure is over in the fourth round. The 19 year-old Konjuh was stopped in the fourth round of this year’s Wimbledon by the tenth seed Venus Williams. After 65 minutes on the centre court Williams won 6:3 – 6:2 and moved into the quarter finals.

Williams was on the mark from the very start of the match and with her punishing service and accurate returns broke Konjuh. However after three straight wins and her first ever appearance on the centre court of the most prized tennis finals in the world Konjuh can be more than proud of her Wimbledon achievements.

It was in many ways a match of experience over youth. Williams is 18 years older than Konjuh, she has played seven finals on the centre court and has won every major tournament the game has to offer. Konjuh is at the beginning of a bright career and the experience gained from today’s match will no doubt stand her in good stead for the future.

Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser tend to impress with everything they do and this time, of course, they did it again. The famous duo from Croatia – 2Cellos delighted everybody with the cello cover of the song that will surely mark 2017 – Despacito.

Their latest video shows them playing, but also singing this hit song (not knowing the words, like almost everybody) and then playing it with a small crowd in Zagreb. For now, video has over million and the half views and is growing rapidly.

- It’s Summer time and we just had to do a video of this song for you guys!!! ENJOY!!! – 2 Cellos wrote on their Facebook page and got almost 20 thousand likes.

You’ve probably heard this song, well, almost everywhere and this version might come as something new and refreshing.

Despite the fact that the number of divorces in Croatia has risen by 20 percent in comparison to last year, the country is still below the European average.

According to the latest data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (DZS), in 2016 the divorce rate rose by almost 20 percent compared to 2015 when 6,010 married couples got divorced. In 2014 the situation was even worse, 7,036 divorces were recorded that year.

Sandro Belic, a marriage counsellor says that more and more men want to leave the sacred institution of marriage. According to statistics, this usually occurs between the tenth and the fourteenth as well as after twentieth year of marriage.

''If we are not happy and satisfied with our relationship and we do not talk about it, we have expectations that we have not actually spoken about, thus we are on our own in our suffering. As long as we are willing to suffer, we remain in that relationship'', explains Belic.

With a divorce rate of 34 divorces per 100 marriages, Croatia is still below the European average according to which every other married couple get divorced.

Dubrovnik is without doubt having its busiest tourism year on record and one clear indicator of the growth of interest in the city is the Dubrovnik Airport. As a front line in the tourism industry the airport has seen a massive growth in the number of passenger numbers so far in 2017.

Last month the airport had the busiest June on record with a whooping 338,729 passengers handled, or around 11,000 passengers a day. This is an impressive 17.3 percent increase over June last year and it total Dubrovnik Airport handled 812,553 passengers in the first six months of this year, again an increase over last year and this time by 20 percent.

It is predicted that by the end of July over a million passengers will have travelled through Dubrovnik Airport and by the end of the end the 2 million passenger mark will be broken.

The world's first artificial football turf Polytan, certified according to the FIFA Handbook 2015 with the prestigious FIFA Quality Pro certification was set up at the Aminess Football Centre in Novigrad, Istria.

This very demanding and expensive project was realized in cooperation with the Maxmar Group from Zagreb and fully meets all the needs of professional clubs and players in top leagues.

Mladen Knezevic, the marketing director at Aminess Hotels & Campsites commented, ''More than a hundred football teams a year, mostly from Croatia, Austria, Slovenia and Germany come to preparations to Aminess Hotels & Campsites. Manchester City Juniors will visit us for the fourth time in a row this year, whilst we have been hosting first league players at Istria Winter Cup for seven years now. Furthermore, the second Istria Youth Camp will be held in October 2017, which will gather younger selections of the best European clubs such as Milan, Roma, Manchester City, Dinamo, Redbull Salzburg and others. The fact that over the past few years we have been recording a continuous increase by 10% -15% in arrivals of sports groups and individual athletes, has only led us to a decision to direct our investments in the high quality sports infrastructure''.

Polytan is a manufacturer of synthetic turf systems across the world and has been a FIFA Preferred Producer since 2011. In December 2016, Polytan, together with its partner company Maxmar Group, installed the LigaTurf RS Pro II CoolPlus premium football turf system with the Bionic Fibre infill granules and an elastic layer laid in situ.

Carried out according to the new FIFA criteria at the beginning of this February, the certification confirms that the playing surface meets the highest standards in terms of playing properties, safety, long life and execution of construction work.

For the Aminess Football Club in Novigrad, the FIFA Quality Pro certificate is also a prerequisite for staging recognized international matches as well as international club competitions and is confirmation from the world’s football governing body of the high quality of the synthetic turf.
