Ryanair to Go Fully Digital: No More Paper Boarding Passes or Airport Check-In Desks by May 2025

Written by  Oct 05, 2024

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary has announced that the company plans to eliminate paper boarding passes and airport check-in desks within a few months. Starting in May next year, passengers will need to check in online or through the Ryanair app before arriving at the airport, as the airline will no longer provide this service at check-in desks, currently available for a £55 fee. This shift aims to boost the app's use, which O'Leary expects to rise to 80% by the end of the year.

"We're working on ensuring that from May 1st, everything will be done via the app, and nothing will be on paper anymore. I was one of the last to use paper because I was horrified to board without it and was reluctant to use the app, but it works so well. The app tells you your gate, delays, and everything else. Customers who want paper are the same ones who resisted online ticket purchases but were the first to use the internet for cheaper flights," said O'Leary.

He added that procedures are already in place for cases where a passenger's phone battery dies, and they cannot access their reservation information.

"If your battery dies, we know your seat, we have your travel documents, and we can do everything at the boarding gate. We already do this when we can't scan someone's phone for any reason. Once we get your name and passport, it's fine, and everything will be in the app," Ryanair's CEO explained.

Currently, 60% of passengers use the app, and O'Leary expects this to rise to 80% by year-end.
