Dubrovnik Cable Car - So What Awaits at the Top?

Written by  Jul 29, 2024

At the base of Srđ Mountain, towering over Dubrovnik's historic Old City, I often get asked, "What is there to do at the top?" Beyond the breathtaking views, there's plenty to explore: a fortress with the Homeland War Museum, thrilling buggy rides and zip-lining, excellent hiking trails, unique shops, and the Panorama restaurant and bar.

"What is there to do when we reach the top?" asked a Canadian couple standing at the base station of the Dubrovnik cable car. They gazed up at Srđ Mountain, an impressive peak rising over 400 meters above Dubrovnik's historic Old City. "Well, aside from the breath-taking views," I answered with a smile, "there's quite a lot to explore."

Dubrovnik Cable Car So What Awaits at the Top 1

Range of activities

First, there's the fortress near the upper station, home to the Homeland War Museum. This fort played a crucial role during the Homeland War, serving as the first line of defence for Dubrovnik and housing the Command HQ of the 163rd Dubrovnik Brigade of the Croatian Army. For the more adventurous, there's a range of activities. How about a buggy ride through the unspoilt nature of the hinterland? It's great fun. There are zip-lines, which have become a real hit this year. The views are spectacular as you whizz down part of the mountain. Additionally, there are excellent hiking trails, which I often walk myself. Within minutes, you can be back in nature, enjoying stunning views over the Elaphite Islands.

Shops and eateries

Around the building at the upper station, you'll find several shops offering unique local treasures. I could go on and on, but I haven't even really mentioned the views yet—they are absolutely priceless. "Oh, that sounds interesting," said my Canadian friends as they waved goodbye, bought tickets, and boarded the cable car. I'm sure they had the time of their lives and filled their holiday photo album to the brim. Their question wasn't unusual, especially considering many might compare it to Alpine destinations where amenities at the top can be scarce. Explaining everything took longer than I expected. I started with the obvious attractions—the aptly named Panorama restaurant and bar, a fantastic spot for a light lunch or coffee. But there's so much more to discover.
