Trsteno Arboretum: A Timeless Sanctuary of Nature and History

Written by  May 29, 2024

In the charming village of Trsteno, just 20 kilometers northwest of Dubrovnik, lies the enchanting Trsteno Arboretum. This verdant haven, which dates back to the late 15th century, is a testament to the enduring allure of nature and history, offering visitors a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

The Trsteno Arboretum is one of the oldest arboretums in this part of the world. It was established in 1492 by the prominent Dubrovnik noble family, the Gučetić-Gozze, who brought back exotic plants and seeds from their travels abroad. Over the centuries, the arboretum has expanded and evolved, now encompassing approximately 28 hectares of gardens, groves, and natural woodlands.

The arboretum's historical significance is further highlighted by its 15th-century summer residence, an elegant villa that once served as a retreat for Dubrovnik's elite. The villa is surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens, featuring ancient stone aqueducts, fountains, and pavilions that evoke the grandeur of Renaissance Europe.

Botanical Wonders

Trsteno Arboretum is renowned for its diverse collection of plant species. The garden boasts a wide array of exotic and native flora, including towering palm trees, vibrant bougainvillea, and fragrant citrus groves. One of the most remarkable features is the pair of Oriental Plane trees (Platanus orientalis) at the entrance, believed to be over 500 years old and among the largest and oldest in Europe.

The arboretum is also home to various themed gardens, such as the Renaissance garden with its symmetrical layouts and ornate fountains, and the Baroque garden, which adds a touch of opulence with its intricate designs and statues. The diverse plant life and artistic landscaping provide a feast for the senses and a tranquil setting for a leisurely stroll.

A Film Set and Natural Refuge

In recent years, Trsteno Arboretum gained international fame as a filming location for the hit television series "Game of Thrones." The garden served as the setting for the palace gardens of King's Landing, bringing a touch of Hollywood magic to this already enchanting place.

Beyond its cinematic allure, the arboretum remains a vital center for botanical research and conservation. It plays a crucial role in preserving the region's natural heritage, offering educational programs and guided tours to promote awareness and appreciation of plant biodiversity.
