On the occasion of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders, the Mayor of the City of Dubrovnik, Mato Franković, sent congratulations to his fellow citizens -
Dear citizens of Dubrovnik, respected Croatian defenders,
A quarter of a century has passed since the most glorious victory of the Homeland War. Twenty-five years ago, in August 1995, the Croatian army liberated about 11,000 square kilometres of occupied territory, or almost a fifth of Croatia's territory.
During 84 hours, the military/police operation "Storm" showed all the strength and dignity of our army, it is a lasting reminder of the sacrifice and fearlessness of the people who defended their homeland. "Storm" is truly the crown of the Homeland War.
The pride we feel every year on this day cannot diminish anything, nor can anyone take it away from us. May it fill our hearts again and may there be no room for bitterness in them, but sorrow. Let us cover with it our fallen knights, all veterans and civilians who died during the Croatian struggle for freedom, sovereignty and independence. Let us give them gratitude for the freedom we breathe with full lungs today. Let us never forget their sacrifice, because it is the foundation on which we continue to build today's Croatia!
Dear fellow citizens, ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the City of Dubrovnik and myself, I congratulate you on Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Defenders.
