Over the past weekend, ten wildfires were recorded in the area of the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department, which burned a large area of dry grass, low vegetation, pine forests and reeds. The largest number of fires happened in Metkovic, as many as seven, while the remaining three fires were in Konavle, Trsteno and Peljesac.
Most of the fires happened because of the iresponsible burning of roots and garbage. Because of the, Dubrovnik-Neretva County Police Department calls on all citizens to be responsible while conducting field work or other uses of open flames.
In addition to being a danger to people and their property, fires can also cause significant material damage, but they also threaten to sustain the entire ecosystem, especially wetlands, which are habitats for many species of plants and animals. Fires degrade wetland ecosystems, reduce biodiversity, accelerate soil erosion, alter microclimates and water regimes – Police warns.
