With the lighting of the first Advent candle the sixth Dubrovnik Winter Festival opened last night.
The Mayor of Dubrovnik, Mato Frankovic, lit the first Advent candle – the candle of hope, in front of the Rector’s Palace.
The stone streets of the historic Old City of Dubrovnik took on a festive feel last night as the Christmas decorations were lit for the first time and the festive stands, offering traditional cuisine and drinks as well as handmade gifts, opened their doors. Thousands of people joined in the festive fun and the main street, the Stradun, was absolutely packed.
Traditionally, during the opening of the Dubrovnik Winter Festival, a large choir of Dubrovnik children performed Christmas carols in front of the St. Blaise Church.
Fortunately, the weather allowed the festival to open unobstructed. After a few days of rain the weather was much more settled yesterday and although it was a cold night the rain held off.
The 6th Dubrovnik Winter Festival will last until the 6th of January 2020.
