Polluted seas of Old City harbour brought on the back of south winds

By  Dec 12, 2017

The south winds have been blowing hard for the past few days and apart from overcast skies and rolling seas it has also brought a great deal of plastic pollution to the sea. The employees of the public cleaning company had their hands full this morning as the Old City harbour was far from its normal turquoise blue. Plastic bottles, shoes, balls, logs and various other pollution covered the surface of the sea in the harbour.

One huge tree trunk, which presumably had been blown by the seas from distant parts also floated into the harbour. Five workers of the public cleaning company fished the rubbish out of the sea for most of the morning, a truly horrible sight in Dubrovnik. Many of these bottles are blown up the coastline with the southerly winds from Montenegro and Albania, but with the strength of the winds over the past few days we can’t rule out the possibility of some of this pollution coming from North Africa.
