Dubrovnik’s LUMIART Festival To Light Up the City with Art, Technology, and Magic

Written by  Nov 05, 2024

Only a few days remain until the next edition of the LUMIART Festival of Lights, celebrating the enchanting fusion of light, art, and technology. Organized by the Dubrovnik Tourist Board and produced by Pixel Design, the festival will take place from November 8 to 10, offering visitors a rich lineup of impressive artistic installations, 3D mapping projections, and interactive exhibits at some of the city’s most stunning locations.

The festival kicks off on November 8 at 7:00 PM with an Opening Ceremony in front of the Sponza Palace, where Pixel Design will premiere their 3D mapping spectacle “Evolution of Light.” This vivid journey through the transformative power of light will be shown each night of the festival at 7:00, 8:00, and 9:00 PM.

Highlights from the LUMIART 2024 program include:

- Sponza Palace: The main stage of LUMIART will host various projections, including LIFE, a fantasy video art projection by Emil Petar, set to music by Sasha Lattuca, taking viewers on a surreal journey through nature and human experience. The Sponza façade will also feature a 3D mapping retrospective by Pixel Design, as well as an audiovisual experience with music. In the atrium, Romanian artist Ignat Radu’s impressive installation—a three-meter metal mask animated to constantly change shape, color, and material—will captivate audiences.

- Stradun: “White Light Stilt Angels,” a street performance by Morena and Martin from Martiniuss Circus, will fill Dubrovnik’s main thoroughfare with ethereal light and movement.

- Interactive Installations on Držićeva Poljana: Visualia Group’s “Megaball” and “I Need a Break” installations will invite audience participation, adding a playful dynamic to the festival.

- Celebrating Technology Icons: A special presentation on the wall of café bar Cele will honor Hedy Lamarr’s contributions to technology, presented by the Dubrovnik School of Economics and Commerce. Children’s artworks, created in collaboration with the Dubrovnik Museum of Natural History, will also be displayed.

- 1700 Years of St. Blaise: The Cathedral will be illuminated with a sacred-themed 3D mapping projection in honor of the 1700th anniversary of St. Blaise’s martyrdom.

Each evening, guests can enjoy vibrant slide projections by the Night Projection Collective on Stradun, as well as the interactive light installation “Leaf Motion – Kaleidoscope” at Pile Gate, courtesy of the Hungarian group FényHangÁr.

With Dubrovnik’s ancient architecture as a canvas, LUMIART Festival 2024 promises a unique celebration of art, innovation, and community spirit in honor of International Inventors’ Day on November 9.

To enhance the experience of Dubrovnik’s beautiful nights, café bar Cele is offering a 20% discount on all items from 7:00 to 10:00 PM from November 8 to 10, while Stradoon will offer a 30% discount on all drinks, and La Bodega will have a 25% discount on their selection.
