Sponza Palace Under Restoration: Façade Print Installed During Renovation

Written by  Oct 17, 2024

A fabric with a print of the facade was placed on the front of Sponza this week, where it will remain until the renovation work is completed. Although it is far from ideal it is much better than the solution of the large white sheet which previously covered the building.

The Sponza Palace in the very heart of the historic Old City of Dubrovnik, is one of the gems of the city’s cultural heritage. It was built from 1516 to 1521 by Dubrovnik builder Paskoje Miličević and the Andrijić brothers from Korčula.

During the time of the Dubrovnik Republic, it served various functions, including as a customs office, state treasury, bank, mint, school, and treasury. Today, it serves a different purpose—hosting exhibitions, concerts, and weddings, and until five years ago, it housed part of the State Archives, which has since been relocated to new premises.

By the end of June last year, most of the renovation work on Sponza had already been completed, including exterior work, the restoration of the entire roof, and work on the interior of the palace.
