Dubrovnik 5K Race Raises Funds for Young Marko Akrap

Written by  May 14, 2024

In a heartwarming display of community solidarity, the streets of Dubrovnik were filled with a sea of blue shirts as participants gathered for the annual Dubrovnik 5K race, organised as part of the Du Motion event. This year's race, held on the iconic Stradun, took on special significance as it aimed to support ten-year-old Marko Akrap from Nova Mokošica in his ongoing battle with rare genetic disorders.

Marko, who requires round-the-clock care due to partial trisomy 18 and monosomy 12, found himself at the centre of attention as over a thousand runners joined forces to raise both awareness and funds for his medical treatment. The collective effort of the participants resulted in an impressive sum of 13,776 euros, demonstrating the power of community spirit in times of need.

Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support, Alen Bošković, director of Du Motion, commended the dedication of both runners and volunteers in making the event a success. He extended special thanks to the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department, city services, and volunteers whose efforts ensured the smooth execution of the race and fundraising initiative.

Among the participants were coordinators Karla Sentić and Ante Kolunđija, who presented trophies to the fastest runners, and the youngest coordinator Nevio Krešić, who completed the race once again. Representatives from the Association for Down Syndrome of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County also joined the event, distributing medals to participants as a gesture of appreciation for their support.

The event served as a poignant reminder of the strength of community bonds and the capacity for collective action to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
