Historical Rector’s Palace on Lopud Island Set to Reopen After Restoration

Written by  Sep 15, 2023

On Saturday, September 16th, starting at 11:00 AM, the grand opening of the Rector’s Palace on the island of Lopud Island will take place. This is a renovated and equipped complex that the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities acquired in 2019 from a private owner, allowing for its restoration. This building, once exclusively used for private purposes, has now been adapted for general use.

The ceremonial opening includes a program that weaves together highlights from Lopud's rich history with the process of restoring the Rector’s Palace.

The Rector’s Palace on Lopud dates back to 1508 and served as the seat of the former Lopud Rector (local administration). Interestingly, the exterior of Lopud's palace resembles more of a summer residence with its Gothic decoration on the facade. According to historical sources, the interior of the palace was modestly furnished and entirely suited for the purpose of local administration.

From 1457 to 1808, Lopud had at least 443 Rectors (local leaders) and was a centre of Dubrovnik's maritime activity.
