Empowering Change: Annual 'Women's Bank Walk' in Dubrovnik Supports Women's Livelihoods Across the Globe

Written by  Aug 30, 2023

The event "Women's Bank Walk" is intended to raise funds to improve the quality of life for women in underdeveloped countries, focusing on providing access to education and enabling self-sustaining income.

It will take place on September 3rd, starting at 6 PM in front of the Church of St. Blaise, with a symbolic walk along Stradun. Introductory speeches will be given by Raija Kemilainen, one of the founders of Women's Bank, Hrvoje Brbora, the Honorary Consul of Finland in Dubrovnik, and Jelka Tepšić, Deputy Mayor.

The event will be enhanced with a short musical performance, followed by the traditional women's walk along Stradun, around the grand Onofrio's Fountain, and back in front of St. Blaise's Church, where the event will conclude with a group photo of all participants. In addition to the collected donations, as is the case every year, Finnish sponsors will donate a certain amount for each participant, making it important to gather as many people as possible.

The Women's Bank Walk in Dubrovnik will be held for the ninth consecutive year, serving as a testament to Dubrovnik's longstanding connection with Finland and the rest of Europe, united by the noble goal of aiding women in underdeveloped countries. In recent years, Dubrovnik has achieved significant success in terms of donations and participant numbers, as was the case last year when 8,900 euros were raised. This marked the third consecutive year that Dubrovnik secured the top position in terms of donations compared to other cities where the charity walk for women was organized.

The May campaign in Dubrovnik brought 6,142 euros to Women's Bank. Two events were held, featuring a buffet dinner, a fashion show showcasing Croatian, Finnish, and Danish brands with volunteer models, a musical performance by Finnish saxophonist and DJ Kristian Lakari, a Dubrovnik photo booth cabin, and a lottery with valuable sponsorship donations.

The humanitarian organization that initiated the symbolic women's walk, Women's Bank (Naisten Pankki), was established in 2007. It was founded by a group of Finnish businesswomen who, after their visit to Liberia, were deeply moved by the poverty they witnessed there and decided to help. Since its inception, over 21.5 million euros have been collected to combat poverty, providing a better life opportunity to 460,000 people in 14 countries. The focus is on women and their capacity for independent work and earning. The idea is to educate them and thereby help them earn a living on their own, thus improving the quality of life for women, children, and ultimately the entire local community.
