The City of Dubrovnik has initiated a public procurement process for the installation of equipment and the renovation of the Memorial Room for fallen defenders of Dubrovnik in the Sponza Palace, which will be designed according to the project by author Nikolina Jelavić Mitrović.
The newly designed contemplative space, fitting for the sacrifice made by the defenders, will be divided into three sections. The central part will display the profiles of 195 fallen defenders of Dubrovnik, with their photographs, names, and other important information applied on a wooden base of oak and glass, displayed on bronze walls that will form a new core within the room. A lantern reminiscent of candlelight will project 195 candles burning in memory of the fallen.
The introductory section will provide information about the beginnings and course of the Homeland War in the Dubrovnik area. The center of the room will house a floor map of the old core of Dubrovnik with marked aggressor hits and a remembrance of the fallen defenders. The third part will be equipped with a large screen displaying a series of films and photographs depicting wartime events and the aggressor's destruction of the city. An interactive LED display video wall will contain numerous illustrative materials and information about the Homeland War and the defenders, as well as the city's reconstruction and the importance of peace.
The furnishing and renovation works to realize this envisioned space are the subject of the public procurement competition, which will be open until September 12th. Upon the selection of the contractor, the project will commence to reconfigure the existing Memorial Room in a way that encapsulates the entire narrative of the city's wartime suffering, with a particular emphasis on the greatest sacrifice - the lives lost of those who defended it.
