The wildfire in the territory of Župa Dubrovačka has rekindled due to strong winds that blew in the afternoon hours.
The county fire commander, Stjepan Simović, described the situation at the fire site for the central news program of Croatian Television.
"The situation is not good, the strong wind has been hindering us all morning, but this hurricane-force wind that started in the afternoon has disrupted everything we have been doing and striving for. Everything has literally gone downhill," said Simović.
The fire is being fought on two fronts, the eastern and western.
"The fires are spreading rapidly. Župa is a small municipality, densely populated, and developed for tourism, so now we have to worry a lot about what will happen," said Simović.
The south-eastern wind is complicating the situation.
"Today, there were two Canadair planes the whole day, but it just doesn't work; the wind is too strong, and they couldn't operate. The turbulence was significant, and the strong gusts of wind prevented them from working," explained Simović.
