Written by  Jul 13, 2023

The future hiking route "Camino Dubrovnik-Međugorje" was presented today at the Great Council Hall of the City of Dubrovnik. The official unveiling of the project was preceded by the ceremonial signing of the agreement on participation in the project between the partners: the City of Dubrovnik, the City of Čapljina, the municipalities of Dubrovačko Primorje, Ravno, Neum, Čitluk, and the Tourist Board of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton.

Mayor Mato Franković signed the agreement on behalf of the City of Dubrovnik. He stated, "I believe that we are launching a great project whose development will bring new value to our communities," and expressed gratitude to all participants for recognizing the project and dedicating themselves to its realization.

The agreement was signed by Nikola Knežić, the mayor of the Municipality of Dubrovačko Primorje; Andrija Šimunović, the mayor of the Municipality of Ravno; Marin Radišić, the mayor of the Municipality of Čitluk; and Andrija Krešić, the director of the Tourist Board of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. Representing the mayor of the City of Čapljina, Smiljana Vidić, the agreement was signed by Danijela Nogolica from the city administration, while Milan Batinović, an advisor to the mayor of the Municipality of Neum, signed the agreement on behalf of Dragan Jurković.

The Camino Dubrovnik-Međugorje project involves the St. Jakov Way from Dubrovnik to Međugorje, connecting the Benedictine Monastery in Dubrovnik with the St. Jakov Church in Međugorje through a hiking trail spanning approximately 147 kilometres. The project will define and develop a trail that will lead hikers and other interested tourists and travellers from the St. Jakov Monastery in Dubrovnik to the St. Jakov Church in Međugorje over the course of six days.

The coordinator of the project, Goran Cvjetinović, presented the new route. It largely follows the old paths historically used by the local population and boasts numerous valuable natural and heritage sites.

The cleaning and marking of the entire route are planned for September and October, followed by detailed mapping and the creation of an application. Cvjetinović emphasized that great attention is being paid to ensuring safety along the route.

Goran Cvjetinović expressed gratitude to all participants in the project, particularly the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) Station Dubrovnik and the Herzegovina Mountain Rescue Service (stations Čapljina and Čitluk), as well as the mountaineering societies Snježnica and Brotnjo, the Dubrovnik Fire Department, and the Volunteer Fire Departments within the route area. He also thanked the local residents whose contribution in mapping the paths, some of which have not been used for a long time, has been of great assistance.
