The new Pelješac Bridge opens tomorrow, after 1,277 days of work on the largest infrastructure project in the history of the Republic of Croatia. this new 2,404-metre-long bridge will connect the far south of Croatia with the rest of the country and mean that drivers will no longer have to cross over two borders in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Josip Škorić, president of the Croatian Roads Management Board, stated that “The bridge is a true synthesis of structure, architectural design and landscape - it is discreet and completely fascinating in its design.”

He added that “Approximately 33,600 tons of steel were installed in the span construction. The bridge is also special in that for the first time the foundation was made with piles in a 130-metre piece, 1,100 tons of diagonal braces were installed, 68,000 tons of concrete was installed in the bridge.”

Although the new Pelješac Bridge is complete the access roads to the southern side through Ston still haven’t been finished. And due to this the bridge will be closed to heavy traffic until at least the end of the tourist season. “We received recommendations from the road safety audit to close traffic for heavy cargo and the transport of dangerous goods until the end of the tourist season, because passing through Ston is the biggest problem. A decision will be made tomorrow on whether it will be like this at least until the end of the season or until the access roads are completely finished," concluded Škorić.
