On the Day of Dubrovnik Veterans and the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the heroic defence of the city, the Mayor of the City of Dubrovnik, Mato Franković, sent congratulations to the Dubrovnik Veterans and their families.
Dear Dubrovnik defenders,
On this day, when we celebrate your day and your great role in the defence of this city, feelings of sadness and pride are mixed. Sadness, because that December 6, 1991 was one of the most difficult days of aggression against this city in the Homeland War, and pride because you defended it.
It has been 30 years since that fateful day, that Saint Nicholas, which will, unfortunately, mean something else to all the children of this city at the time, something that should not mean anything to any child. Part of you, the Dubrovnik defenders, were children yourself at the time, some of you had children waiting for you to return and listened with trepidation to every grenade and every news that came from our positions.
You have returned to your families, to your children, but some of the veterans never arrived in the warm embrace of their loved ones. We remember them today with special reverence. Your "brothers in arms", who have woven their lives into a free Croatia and which we do not forget.
To all the defenders of Dubrovnik, those who are here today and those who are no longer with us, I would like to express my special thanks this year when we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the heroic defence of the city. Thank you for being brave enough then and having a pure heart to defend your home and homeland.
Eternal thanks on behalf of the City of Dubrovnik,
Mayor - Mato Franković
