Dubrovnik tourism conference “Be The Wheels of Change” to tackle tourism challenges in the city and beyond the walls

On November 26, 2021, the Centre for Entrepreneurship of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County is organizing a conference entitled “Be The Wheels of Change - Diversification of the Dubrovnik Tourist Product.” The conference will be held at the Hotel Adria starting at 9:00am.

Through various national and European research, the main problems of tourism in Croatia have been detected, and these are especially relevant for Dubrovnik as one of the most important tourist destinations. First and foremost, it is excessive or mass tourism that has seen Dubrovnik be included on the list of undesirable holiday destinations in 2017.

Despite this, Dubrovnik faces significant increases in the number of arrivals every year. In the period from 2015 to 2019 alone, that number increased by 62 percent. If only the numbers, or rather the rise in numbers is taken into account then Dubrovnik can be proud of the global interest. However, if the city wants to work on sustainable and resilient tourism, numbers are just one of the factors that are relevant.

Will the politicians actually listen to business?

In this regard, the Centre for Entrepreneurship considers it its task to focus efforts on dialogue with small and medium-sized enterprises, whose involvement in addressing these challenges is crucial.

Through lectures and panel discussions by eminent Croatian experts in tourism, the centre wants to suggest a direction of thinking and offer concrete and feasible solutions so that the city can continue to receive many guests who want to visit it, and at the same time offer them a special experience to recommend to everyone. Whether the city authorities actually listen to this advice remains to be seen.

The proposals that will be presented at the conference will go in the direction of dispersing the offer outside the Old City to make the stay in Dubrovnik and its surroundings more meaningful and encourage visitors to spend only part of their time in the city and dedicate the rest to destinations further afield.
