Župa dubrovačka has a new landmark, a bronze sculpture of “Župka” a symbol of the region. In days gone by Župka would carry fruit and vegetables from the fertiles lands of Župa into the Old City of Dubrovnik to sell in the green markets. The bronze statue was unveiled yesterday on the coastal promenade in Srebreno and it is sure to be an attraction for centuries to come.

The life-size statue of “Župka” was created by artist and sculptor Petar Dolić, was unveiled on the promenade in Srebreno. The head of the borough council, Silvio Nardelli, commented at the opening “Župka is a symbol of a woman from Župa Dubrovacka who, with her hard work on the fertile land, carried the fruits of her labour in a basket on her head to the green markets. Župka has become a symbol of our municipality, and the coat of arms of the municipality represents Župa with a basket on its head, and it is actually something that has been recognizable for many years for Župa dubrovačka.”

And the director of the Župa Tourist Board, Anamarija Kusalo, commented that “Not only does this statue symbolise the region but its unveiling also represents a great anniversary, 100 years of organised tourism in Župa dubrovačka.”

The unveiling ceremony was marked by a performance from the Cultural/Artistic association “KUD Marko Marojica” who performed traditional songs.
