The stone replica of a dog that for centuries has adorned the Great Onofrio Fountain is once again back in its rightful position. The dog statue was removed at the beginning of the 19th century when it fell from its perch. The dog was added to the iconic Dubrovnik fountain immediately after the construction of the monument in the 15th century. Although it was damaged in the great earthquake that hit the city in 1667 it remained in place until at the beginning of the 19th century it fell and was badly damaged.
Thanks to the Society of the Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities the dog, or at least a replica of the dog, is now once again on top of the fountain. Various animals adorned the top walls of the fountain when it was completed in 1438 by the Italian architect Onofrio della Cava.
The complete Onofrio Fountain has been restored and all of the sixteen gargoyle-like faces, or Maskerons, have been repaired.
