Out of the 433 kindergartens, primary and secondary schools founded by the City of Zagreb, 25 of them cannot be used due to earthquake damage, and four of them, two primary and two secondary schools, have a red mark.
Ivica Lovric, head of the Zagreb City Office for Education, expects that a final damage assessment at all kindergartens and schools will be known in the coming weeks, but points out that no kindergarten or school building damaged in the earthquake needs demolition, and that they all can be restored.
-The City of Zagreb, as the founder of kindergartens and schools, will repair all damaged facilities and we expect that by the beginning of the new school year all kindergartens and most of the currently unusable schools will be repaired and ready for use - Lovric told Hina.
Lovric also announced that if regular classes were to be held again in schools as early as this school year, students of currently unused schools would attend classes in other schools organized in one shift.
Longer-term rehabilitation will be needed for one student dormitory, two dance schools, and nine regular schools.
An Act on the Restoration of Earthquake Damaged Buildings in Zagreb and its Surroundings is under development, which will regulate the manner and sources of financing the renovation of all buildings, including school buildings.
