Croatian televised education model to be introduced in UK by BBC

Written by  Apr 09, 2020

Croatian schools introduced classes through the public television a month ago and this same model is going to be copied and introduced in the UK. Elementary and high school students throughout Croatia have been glued to lessons on the television, at varying times throughout the day, to continue their education after schools were closed to avoid the spread of COVID-19. And this same education model will soon hit the screens of televisions throughout the UK.

The Croatian televised model has already been widely praised in the British media with the Croatian Public Broadcaster, HRT, singled out for this innovative approach.

Following the example of Croatia, British pupils and students will be following the educational programs from the 20th of April on the BBC, one of the most influential and largest public services in Europe.

It was already clear at the beginning coronavirus crisis that with the decision to close the schools across Croatia that the education system had no other option but to introduce a televised service. The model introduced by Croatia, using public services for educational purposes, was also used during wartime and in the first week of broadcasting received praise from much more developed countries, as Croatia was the first country to ensure continuity in educational content for students.

Tony Hall, Director General of the BBC, commented that “In these uncertain times parents look to the BBC to support them and offer education while children can’t be in school. This is the biggest education effort the BBC has ever undertaken. This comprehensive package is something only the BBC would be able to provide.” And he added that ““We have been overwhelmed by the offers of help and support in putting this provision together and are looking forward to ensuring every child can continue to learn, and have fun, through our high-quality teaching and accessible education offer.”
