"We are attempting to reach an agreement over nonstop flights between Zagreb, Beijing and Shanghai. Croatia has been recognised by Chinese tourists as an interesting new destination in Europe", recently commented Croatia's Prime Minister, Andrej Plenković.
Direct air links between Croatia and China have been in the pipeline for a few years and it would appear that this could become a reality this year. Croatia is becoming more and more interesting for Chinese tourists and the number of guests has been constantly rising even though there are no direct flights between the two countries.
However, the Croatian Minister for Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Oleg Butković, met with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing to discuss the introduction of flights to Zagreb this year, according to a report on the specialised website EX-YU Aviation. It is believed that the final agreement on the new air link will be made in May in Dubrovnik when the China Summit will be held.
Hainan Airlines are reported to be "very interested" in launching flights from China to Zagreb. "We discussed the possibility of Hainan Airlines introducing nonstop flights from China to Croatia, most probably to Zagreb. The launch of this service would boost the number of Chinese tourists to Croatia", said the Zagreb-based Chinese Southeast European Business Association.
