Croatia dominated Argentina in front of 45,000 fans in Nizhny Novgorod last night in the second group game of the 2018 World Cup. Goals from Ante Rebic, the captain Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic saw Croatia crush the South Americans 3 – 0.
From the very beginning of the match Croatia were on top and completely suffocated Lionel Messi and the rest of the Argentine midfield. In fact, in the first half Argentina failed to have a shot on target. Argentina looked nervous from the start and Messi was well marked all game. This was their biggest defeat at a World Cup since 1958 and the future in the competition now hangs in the balance.
Following their opening 2 -0 win over Nigeria Croatia now sit on top of group D with 6 points and look almost certain to win the group and progress into the later stages.
This was Croatia’s first win against South American opposition having lost their previous four encounters at past World Cups.
