The popular Slavonian honey (Slavonski med) is now protected at the European Union level with a designation of origin and is the 19th Croatian product with geographical origin label registered in the EU.
After the Ministry of Agriculture had sent a request for protection of the Slavonian honey, the European Commission assigned the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) to the Croatian product.
‘’The protection of the product name is primarily a recognition of tradition and specificity from which both producers and consumers can benefit. Besides, this protection increases the visibility of our products and represents us on the market of 500 million people’’, commented the Minister of Agriculture Tomislav Tolušić.
By the mode of production, the Slavonian honey is comb honey, chunk comb honey and extracted honey. It includes black locust honey, linden honey, sunflower honey, chestnut honey, flower honey and Hungarian Oak honeydew honey.
