Eighteen years after appearing in the semi-finals of the Australian Open the Croatian tennis sensation Mirjana Lucic-Baroni is back in the semi-finals. This has to be the most incredible sports story for years, a veteran tennis player at 34-years-old with strapped-up legs has battled against some of the best tennis players in the world to reach the semi-finals, after an 18-year break!
“I know this means a lot to every player to reach the semi-finals but to me this is overwhelming. I will never ever, ever forget this day or the last couple of weeks,” said Lucic-Baroni. She fell to her knees in disbelief after defeating the fifth seed Karolina Pliskova, at 24 ten years younger than Lucic-Baroni, 6-4 3-6 6-4 at Rod Laver Arena. She has already defeated the third seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, on her amazing Australian journey.
“I can’t believe this, this is crazy. All I can say is God is good … I’m in the semi-finals again. I’m a little bit in shock right now,” said Lucic-Baroni.
In the semi-finals she will face another tough test, six time Australian Open champion, Serena Williams.
