Croatia’s Economic Climb: Fastest GDP Growth in Region and Rising Living Standards

Written by  Apr 25, 2025

At the start of Thursday’s government session, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković emphasized Croatia’s strong macroeconomic performance. The revised GDP growth rate for 2024 stands at 3.9%, the second-highest in the EU, just behind Malta. Croatia’s GDP per capita has now reached the level of Hungary’s and surpassed that of Slovakia, Greece, Latvia, and Bulgaria.

Plenković pointed out that Croatia’s economy is growing four times faster than the EU and eurozone average, which reflects a real improvement in citizens’ standard of living. With sustained growth at this rate, Croatia could double its GDP in just 18 years, compared to 70 years if growing at just 1%.

He also highlighted that the average salary has increased from €749 in 2016 to €1,416 in February 2025, a nominal rise of 89%. Employment has also risen sharply, with 1.71 million people employed and only 83,000 unemployed, meaning 300,000 more jobs since 2016.

Fuel prices in Croatia are currently lower than before the war in Ukraine, and remain among the lowest in the region and EU. Plenković promised continued government measures to keep energy prices affordable.
