Tax Administration: Data Reveals Sharp Decline in Retail Transactions Amid Boycott

Data from the Croatian Tax Administration, published on Saturday, shows that the total number of retail receipts issued on Friday, January 24, was 44% lower compared to Friday, one week earlier. The total value of receipts dropped by 53%. Across all industries, the number of receipts decreased by 29%, and the total value fell by 36%.

In the category "Retail trade, excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles," 2,081,506 fiscalized receipts were issued in Croatia on Friday, with a total value of €28,604,251.58. A week earlier, on January 17, the total number of fiscalized receipts was 3,697,571, amounting to €60,565,083.41.

Citizens Boycott Retailers: Plenković Responds

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković commented on the growing boycott movement targeting retailers over high prices. On January 24, stores across Croatia experienced empty aisles and significantly reduced sales figures.

According to data, the number of fiscalized receipts on Friday, January 24, was 29% lower across all industries than on January 17, with the total value down 36%. Specifically, on January 24, there were 5,096,083 fiscalized receipts across all sectors, amounting to €78,373,051.19. The previous week, on January 17, the total was 7,195,480 receipts worth €121,898,234.32.

The Boycott Movement

This sharp decline coincided with a boycott of retailers initiated in protest against rising prices. The campaign was organized by the Facebook group “Halo, inspektore,” supported by the European Consumer Excellence Center (ECIP), consumer protection groups, unions, political parties, and even the Minister of Economy. Messages promoting the boycott circulated widely on social media in the days leading up to January 24.
