In a profound act of empathy and advocacy for children affected by conflict, Croatian-born Marko Kasic, founder of FundLife and a former refugee of the Yugoslav Wars, has successfully completed a 421 km run across ten days. This monumental effort concluded at the Peace and Sport Forum in Monaco and is part of Kasic’s 'Move for Peace' initiative, designed to bring attention to the plight of children who are caught in conflict zones around the world.
"Having been displaced by the conflict in Yugoslavia during my own childhood, I feel a deep connection to children who are currently suffering in similar situations," Kasic stated. "This run was an expression of solidarity and a call to action to support these young lives disrupted by conflict."
Kasic’s journey ended in Monte Carlo, where he participated in the Peace and Sport Forum's Peace Walk alongside dignitaries such as H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and renowned football star Didier Drogba. The event highlighted the unifying power of sport and its role in healing and educating children affected by conflict.
The launch of the Red Balloon Project, announced in conjunction with the forum, focuses on play-based interventions to bring joy and normalcy back to the lives of affected children. "Through the Red Balloon Project, we aim to restore a sense of childhood to those who have been robbed of it by conflict," Kasic emphasized.
Choosing Monaco as the venue to announce this initiative was strategic, serving as a stark contrast to the harsh realities faced by many children in conflict zones. "Initiating this significant project in Monaco, a place symbolizing prosperity and peace, highlights the disparity between worlds and underscores the urgent need for action in areas affected by conflict," Kasic remarked.
Kasic also called upon the global sports community to strengthen their efforts in social advocacy: "Sport has a profound capacity to bridge divides and foster peace. It is crucial that the sports world not only advocates for peace but actively participates in creating lasting change for these vulnerable populations."
