Croatia’s European Commissioner Dubravka Šuica announced on X that she has been re-nominated for another five-year term. Šuica, affiliated with the center-right European People’s Party, expressed her deep honor and gratitude to the Croatian government, led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, who reposted her announcement, reports Politico.
Šuica, a former MEP, mayor of Dubrovnik, and German language teacher, has held the democracy and demography portfolio since 2019. She becomes only the second female member of the outgoing 27-strong College of Commissioners, after President Ursula von der Leyen, to be set for a return.
Šuica will need to undergo a hearing in the European Parliament to secure her second term. President von der Leyen has requested that countries not renominating their current commissioners propose both a male and a female candidate. However, most countries have so far named only a male candidate.
Deeply honoured & grateful to @VladaRH for nominating me as a candidate for the next @vonderleyen @EU_Commission!
