Survey Shows Decline in Wine Consumption and Changing Preferences Among Croatians

Written by  Jul 28, 2024

A recent survey reveals a slight decline in the number of wine consumers in Croatia over the past four years, reports Danica

The survey, conducted in June by the magazine Ja trgovac and the Hendal agency, sampled a nationally representative group of Croatian citizens over 16 years old. The sample covered six regions and four settlement sizes, with households randomly selected.

The findings show that 83 percent of citizens currently drink wine, a decrease of 2 percent compared to four years ago. Notably, one in five Croatians consumes wine at least once a week, and 22 percent do so monthly. Daily wine consumption has also dropped, with only 5 percent of residents drinking wine every day, down from 8 percent four years ago.

Preferences in wine types have also shifted. White wine remains the top choice for 46 percent of consumers, marking a 2 percent increase since 2020. In contrast, red wine consumption has decreased significantly, with only 42 percent of respondents choosing it, a drop of 6 percent. Interestingly, some former red wine drinkers have switched to rosé, which now enjoys a preference among 11 percent of the population, an increase of 4 percent.

The survey also highlights changes in purchasing habits. Currently, 71 percent of citizens buy wine in stores, a significant decrease of 10 percent from four years ago. Conversely, the number of people purchasing wine directly from winemakers has increased by the same margin, now standing at 22 percent.

These trends reflect shifting preferences and behaviors among Croatian wine consumers, indicating a more diverse and dynamic wine market in the country.
