The captain of the Croatian national football team, Luka Modrić, will join Real Madrid's preseason preparations in two weeks, a club official said on Wednesday.
"Luka Modrić is a Real Madrid player. He will start training with us on July 25," the official told Hina.
The 38-year-old midfielder's contract expired ten days ago. European champion Real Madrid has yet to announce a contract extension on its website.
The Croatian player is currently on vacation after Croatia was eliminated from the European Championship about ten days ago. In the last match, a 1-1 draw with Italy, he scored the opening goal after missing a penalty.
Upon returning to Madrid, Modrić will train with his teammates for three days at the club's camp in the northern suburb of Valdebebas, before flying to the United States.
Modrić is expected to take over the captain's armband after 34-year-old defender Nacho Fernandez left the club last month. He has been the vice-captain so far.
Real Madrid's preseason in the U.S. includes matches against AC Milan on August 1, followed by games against Barcelona and Chelsea.
They will then play the European Super Cup final against Italy's Atalanta in Warsaw.
Modrić has been with Real Madrid since the summer of 2012, winning 26 trophies with the club.
