Croatian Export Growth Slows While Imports Surge, Widening Trade Deficit in Early 2024

The value of Croatian goods exports in the first five months of this year amounted to 9.7 billion euros, which is 0.8 percent higher than in the same period last year, while imports increased by 3.4 percent to 17.3 billion euros, according to the initial data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS), published on Tuesday.

The foreign trade deficit was 7.6 billion euros, and the export-to-import ratio was 55.8 percent. In the first five months of last year, the coverage was 57.3 percent. 

According to initial DZS data, exports to EU member states in the first five months of this year amounted to 6.3 billion euros, or 4.3 percent less than in the same period last year. The value of imported goods from EU member states increased by eight percent to 13.8 billion euros.

Statistics for exports to non-EU countries recorded an increase of 12.2 percent to 3.3 billion euros, with a simultaneous decrease in goods imports by 11.6 percent to 3.5 billion euros.

DZS also released other, revised data on goods trade for the first four months of this year, showing that exports compared to the same period in 2023 increased by 0.1 percent to 7.7 billion euros, and imports by 3.7 percent to 13.7 billion euros. According to revised data, the foreign trade deficit in the first four months of this year was almost six billion euros, and the export-to-import ratio was 56.1 percent.
