Croatia Commemorates Anti-Fascist Resistance Day on June 22

Written by  Jun 22, 2024

Since 2002, Croatia has commemorated June 22 as Anti-Fascist Resistance Day, a national holiday established by the Law on Holidays, Memorial Days, and Non-Working Days. This public holiday, also known as Anti-Fascist Struggle Day (Croatian: Dan antifašističke borbe), honors the formation of the First Sisak Partisan Detachment, a Communist-led guerrilla unit, on June 22, 1941, in the Brezovica forest near Sisak. This detachment was the first anti-fascist unit in Croatia and the wider region.

Anti-Fascist Resistance Day marks the beginning of the Croatian wing of the Yugoslav Partisans' uprising against Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and their puppet state, the Independent State of Croatia. Following the occupation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia by Germany and Italy in mid-April 1941, the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY) received orders from the Moscow-based Comintern to aid the Soviet Union when Germany attacked it on June 22.

The Croatian Parliament introduced Anti-Fascist Resistance Day in 1991, replacing a similar holiday, the "Day of the Uprising of the People of Croatia," which was celebrated on July 27 during the Socialist Republic of Croatia era. This earlier commemoration alluded to the Srb uprising, which, like the Anti-Fascist Struggle Day, is still remembered today by anti-fascist organizations and minority communities targeted during World War II, though it is not an official holiday.
