As many as 99.1 percent of Croatian beaches received an ‘excellent’ rating from the European Commission!
According to the TimeOut portal in its article ‘It’s official: this country has the cleanest sea in Europe’, a new report has revealed that it is Croatia.
A report by the European Commission and the European Environment Agency, which examined the waters of all 27 EU countries as well as Albania and Switzerland, showed that 99.1 percent of Croatian coasts have ‘excellent’ water quality - that is, 886 out of 894 tested sites.
What makes the sea excellent, according to the Bathing Water Directive, are the assessments of microbiological data, which are classified as poor, sufficient, good, or excellent.
Greece is in second place in the European Commission’s report, followed by Cyprus, then Austria. The report also revealed that European coastal waters are generally cleaner than inland waters.
