Austrian Newspaper Warns Vacationers of Rising Costs for Summer Holidays in Croatia

Written by  May 30, 2024

The renowned Austrian newspaper "Österreich" has alerted its readers to brace for higher expenses for their summer getaways to Croatia this year. With an enticing portrayal of the Croatian Adriatic, as reported by Večernji list, the newspaper paints a picture of turquoise blue seas, dreamlike landscapes, and a captivating culture, promising an unforgettable vacation experience. Undoubtedly, Croatia has emerged as one of the favorite summer destinations for Austrians due to its rich diversity of offerings.

However, the newspaper cautions that vacationing in Croatia this year will come at a higher price, with costs estimated to be ten percent more expensive than the previous year. This increase is primarily attributed to the transition from the Croatian kuna to the euro, which has significantly impacted prices across the country. Despite the rise in expenses, tourists seem undeterred, with approximately 21 million visitors flocking to the Adriatic paradise in 2023, including half a million Austrian tourists.

For those planning a Croatian getaway, "Österreich" provides insights into the estimated expenses. On average, a week-long vacation in Croatia could cost around 945 euros per person, excluding airfare. This budget includes accommodation in a three-star hotel, dining at local restaurants, rental of a small vehicle, and participation in various activities. However, for budget-conscious travelers, opting for accommodations with one or two stars and indulging in fast-food options can significantly reduce expenses to approximately 42 euros per day.

For those seeking a more luxurious experience, "Österreich" offers an approximate calculation of costs for an extravagant vacation on the Croatian Adriatic coast. This includes accommodations in four-star hotels, gourmet dining, car rentals, and exclusive activities, with prices starting at around 285 euros per person per day.

While Croatia's peak summer months tend to be the most expensive, travelers can also enjoy a more affordable experience during the pre and post-season periods. However, it's worth noting that destinations like Split and Dubrovnik are among the priciest along the Adriatic coast.

Despite the increase in costs, Croatia remains a highly sought-after tourist destination, with strong reservations and a promising start to the spring season. For Austria, which boasts an exceptionally loyal tourist base in Croatia, the Adriatic paradise continues to be a top choice for summer vacations.
