Rising Prices in Croatia Raise Concerns: Is the Adriatic Becoming Too Expensive?

Written by  Aug 17, 2023

Croatia has become expensive, but is it also too expensive, writes the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) newspaper. And what does inflation have to do with current prices, as well as the introduction of the euro?

"With the not-so-pleasant superlative 'Expensive, More Expensive, Croatia,' an Austrian tabloid recently described the price development in the country, which is, alongside Italy, the most beloved foreign destination for Austrians," begins the article in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that analyzes the reasons and possible consequences of the current prices in Croatia, as reported by Deutsche Welle.

The euro, FAZ notes, seems to have truly justified its reputation as the "teuro" (a term used in Germany after the introduction of the euro to indicate that everything has become more expensive due to the euro). Since the beginning of this year, the euro has been the official currency in Croatia.

"Croatia, however, has not been particularly affordable before, but now to many, the Adriatic is becoming a luxurious destination. The internet and yellow press are full of complaints about prices in Dalmatia and Istria," writes the German newspaper. As examples of high prices, they mention the cost of an ice cream scoop in Dubrovnik (allegedly five euros) or a hamburger that costs 22 euros in a city in Istria.

FAZ also reports in this context the statement of Croatian Finance Minister Marko Primorac, who publicly commented on the price development at the end of June. At that time, he expressed concern about the price increase and warned that if this trend continues, it could endanger the tourist season and could have long-term (negative) effects, according to the Frankfurt newspaper. Tourism, FAZ notes, is the most important economic sector in Croatia.
