Emigration Trend Accelerates in Croatia: 25% More People Leaving for Abroad Than the Previous Year

Written by  Aug 16, 2023

In 2022, more people left Croatia than arrived, with the number of immigrants being 57,972 and the number of emigrants being 46,287, according to preliminary data from the State Bureau of Statistics. An analysis of the data shows that the positive migration balance is partially due to the arrival of Ukrainian citizens who were fleeing from Russian aggression. However, at the same time, there is also a continuous emigration of Croatian citizens, with emigration increasing by 26% compared to 2021.

A larger number of Croatian citizens are emigrating to other European Union countries, with Germany being the most popular destination, attracting almost half of all emigrants (14,148) from Croatia.

The report also highlights that emigration is the result of various factors, including economic difficulties, lack of job opportunities, seeking better education and employment opportunities, and searching for a more stable economic environment.

The emigration situation has the potential to have profound consequences on Croatia's economy and society, including a reduction in the workforce, loss of professionals, and potential depopulation of certain regions. This is a complex issue that requires careful consideration and possible interventions to mitigate the negative consequences of emigration.
