Three mutated strains of Covid-19 now discovered – latest from Brazil

In the last 24 hours, 643 new cases of Covid-19 virus infection were recorded, and the number of active cases in Croatia today is 3,321.

"It is clear that the whole world is concerned about the appearance of mutated strains of the virus. It is spreading faster, and there is a third variant, which started from Brazil," said Alemka Markotić, the Director of the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases "Dr. Fran Mihaljević, Zagreb, at today’s press conference.

“It first appeared in the UK in September and by the third week the number of infected had risen by over 50 per cent. The next variant is from South Africa, and the latest is in Brazil. It seems that the strain from the UK has not caused more deaths and more serious diseases, but great pressure on the health system, especially if the virus enters a population whose immune system cannot fight because it has cancer. All scientists agreed that sequencing and monitoring of mutants should be increased and that caution should be exercised,” Markotic said.

She added that “We are at the beginning with new variants, as we were a year ago with this virus, when we didn't know much.”
