Flying like Superman above Dubrovnik - now that's what I call freedom!

Written by  Gillie Sutherland Aug 01, 2021

It’s a word that’s been bandied around quite a lot recently, and I’ve been thinking about what it really means to be free.

What I knew for sure was that the day they called “Freedom Day” wasn’t it for me. Not it at all.

My sense of freedom, as it turned out, came in the most unexpected way, as I found myself flying through the air on a zip wire, thanks to DU The Wire.

It was without a doubt the most exhilarating experience I have had in Croatia, and the best way to enjoy the scenery along the coastline just south of Dubrovnik.

At 175m above sea level, speeds upto 100 km/hr for a length of 900m, the whole body is suspended in the air and you fly Superman-style above the sea on a wire.

I have to admit to having my doubts about the whole thing, and on the morning of the “flight”, I’d found myself wondering exactly how I’d gotten myself into this.

But this is the work. To go from fear to freedom, via courage.

Where fear is a reaction, courage is a choice.

So when the message came, there was only one answer.

“Fancy giving this a go??”.

I watch the video, and all I can think is “free as a bird”, even though my last zip wire experience aged 7 left me with a scar down the side of my eye, and the whole idea frightens the life out of me.

But I’m still on a high from my last adventure, and I know it’s my next mission, so before I know it, I’m on it!

It was one of those life decisions I made before thinking it through. I know that if I’d thought about it properly, done my research, maybe looked at the website for a bit more detail, I probably wouldn’t have done it.

But I trust Zrinka, my friend who had sent the message. She’s one of these people when you meet them you think “whatever it is that you’re doing, I’m in!”.

She’d given me an Energetic Facelift just the week before and it was so powerful, like some little light was switched on inside me. If she’d suggested we go to the moon, I would have said yes.

It was strange because from the moment I took off, I loved it. Every second of it. I felt free, literally free as a bird.

“Sod you Boris and your Freedom Day”, I thought.

“This is what freedom feels like”.

Thoughts of the pandemic, the worries about work, and any other issues are far from my mind.

In that moment I am free, no restrictions, no fear holding me back. I can do anything. I am strong and courageous.

I am sure this is having a positive impact on every aspect of my well-being, this new courage. Physically, mentally, emotionally, even spiritually, I feel stronger.

I also know that this in turn helps strengthen and support my immune system, which is so important in these times. When so much feels out of our control, I turn to those things I can control.

One of my heroes Wim Hof says;

“The only thing that matters is that we keep ourselves strong, healthy and happy”.

I’m sure it’s no accident that one of our ZipLine instructors, Ivan, is also a fan. He’s the picture of strength, health and happiness, and I have a feeling he may have more options for these types of adventures up his sleeve.

I don’t know what’s next, but all I do know is that I’m hungry for more.

Courage really does seem to be the route to freedom.
