Tourism is far from sun, sand and the sea and Croatia quite clearly has much more to offer than just a sunny spot to roll out your towel, but this new tour by an American agency is about as far from a classic vacation as you can get.
“Scores of these wonderfully bizarre monuments lay scattered across the hills and mountains of the region, vast Modernist effigies raised to commemorate the deeds of anti-fascist partisans and revolutionaries,” writes the agency Atlas Obsura on their tour entitled “Past Future Monuments of the Balkans.”
In 1984 Sarajevo was the home of the Winter Olympics
For a mere $3,650 guests can get up close and personal with the concrete history of Yugoslavia, from the Sniper Monument in Serbia to the abandoned Olympic Centre in Sarajevo and Tito’s Mausoleum. “Once upon a time, these striking sites were busy with tour buses and school children, but ever since the collapse of Yugoslavia, the visitors have dwindled,” adds Atlas Obsura.

The agency specialises in working with small groups of up to twelve travellers, and in the niche travel market they have found a unique approach to discovering the regions not so distant past. Monuments to Tito, war memorials and underground tunnels are all included in this 13-day tour and guests will visit Zagreb, Belgrade and Sarajevo.
