Every week The Dubrovnik Times goes to new levels for your pleasure. This time it’s all about culinary pleasure. We have scoured the menus of Dubrovnik to bring you our favourites. And not only did we just research the menus we have gone that extra step and tasted the food in advance for you...its hard work but someone has to do it. I just loved the name of this week’s restaurant Lokal (just change the K for a C and you get the idea).

There is a new jewel in the crown of Dubrovnik’s tourism and it’s located in Zupa. One Suite Hotel is the new kid on the block and it is quickly forging a path as a leading boutique hotel. And incorporated in One Suite Hotel is the funky restaurant Lokal.

The interior is a mixture of industrial chic and monochrome design, whilst the terrace is shaded from the midday sun and spills out onto an attractive lawn complete with its own deckchairs. “I suggest we start with a tasting breakfast menu and work our way through the day,” smiled the friendly manager. From 7.00am to midday you can taste the a la carte breakfast and I would absolutely pick out the lightly boiled eggs with salmon served on a bed of toast. This will get you ready for the day ahead and when you combine it with a freshly squeezed juice and an exotic coffee you are on to a winning start.

When I say exotic coffee I mean it. Lokal is the only restaurant in the region to serve “craft coffee” sent directly from a roasting shop in Zagreb. I tried coffee from Rwanda! There is also homemade Greek yogurt and a wide selection of gluten free meals. “Let’s move onto lunch,” suggested the manager.

The lunch menu is a colourful affair with dishes such as bruschetta with smoked ham, young cheese and olive oil, or swordfish salad with nectarine, or my favourite marinated anchovies with lemon and olive oil. It is a menu that is designed as a “mix and match” style. The individual meals are not expensive so you can use your imagination to combine a few dishes.

And then onto the evening selection – its dinner time! Camembert sticks with a cranberry sauce – delicious. Roasted dried figs with smoked ham – yummy. Or the local favourite “soparnik” which is a dough, garlic, onion and Swiss chard combination that is – glorious.

A different menu for a different time of the day and all can be washed down with either one (or two) of the 70 wines on the list, craft beers, high-end cocktails or exotic coffee. And with 50 different wines available by the glass Lokal is now a firm favourite.
