The devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, one of the strongest in this location this century, was caused by the collision of the Eurasian and African plates in one of the most geologically active zones in the world, reports Slobodna Dalmacija.

Since 1990 alone, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has registered 58 earthquakes in this region – four of them with a magnitude of 7 or higher, which are considered large earthquakes that usually cause serious damage.

Another country from the region, Iran, is also among the countries with the highest seismic activity in the last three decades, reports N1.

And two Asian countries suffered hundreds of earthquakes in the period from 1990 to 2022, namely China and India.

Statista published a list of countries that suffered the most earthquakes in the last 32 years. China is in first place with 182 earthquakes, followed by Indonesia with 161, then Iran with 108. In fourth place is Japan with 94 recorded earthquakes, then the USA with 77 earthquakes, and in sixth place is Turkey with 58 earthquakes. In 7th place is India with 57 earthquakes, and in 8th place is the Philippines, which has suffered 52 earthquakes in the last 30 years.

As for Europe, Statista writes that according to the number of recorded earthquakes in the observed period, the most threatened region is Italy.
