Online Gambling Legalization Law 2021

Written by  Aug 11, 2021

Since the Covid 19 pandemic struck, research shows significant growth in the online casino industry. It comes as no surprise as strict lockdown measures have kept millions of people indoors. In addition, many governments worldwide have taken note of the online gambling industry’s growth and updated gambling laws to protect consumers.

In the following article, Kristoffer Haagensen will discuss Norway’s new laws concerning online gambling. Kristoffer is an expert in the igaming industry who keeps his followers up to date on the latest online casino development.

Online Casinos

With thousands of online casinos on the internet, finding a gambling site that operates legally can be challenging. That’s why it’s best to choose a casino from a directory site like bettingsider norge. The site features licenced casinos only, and you can search for casinos based on your game preferences.

Online casinos offer welcome bonuses, making them very attractive. In some cases, these so-called bonuses aren’t as good as the online casino site. So, it’s crucial to read a casino’s terms and conditions before opening an account.

Europe’s Online Gambling Regulations

The rules and regulations on gambling vary and aren’t the same for all European countries. Some countries are more strict and ban online gambling completely. While other countries are more liberal and have regulations in place that allow citizens to gamble freely.

For instance, the United Kingdom allows people to participate in lotteries, bet on sports and play games like roulette, blackjack, and slot machines. A recent study has shown that online casino games are the most popular form of gambling in the United Kingdom, making up 38.60% of the overall sector.

Norway’s Gaming Legalization Law

In Norway, there are currently three acts in place that regulate gambling within the country. These acts include the Totalisator Act, the 1995 Lottery Act, and the Gambling Act, established in 1992. To summarise, the three pieces of legislation form a monopoly on gambling in Norway.

The Totalisator Act

The Totalisator act foresees that the Norsk Rikstoto foundation has sole rights on horse race betting. In addition, the Ministry of Church and Culture Affairs, together with the Ministry of Agriculture, ensures that all horse betting profits go to charitable organizations.

The 1995 Lottery Act

The Lottery Act of 1995 is the most comprehensive gambling guide. It specifically defines all types of gambling, including sports betting, casino games and lotteries. In addition, the act allows charity organizations to hold gambling events as long as the profits benefit the people of Norway.

The 1992 Gambling Act

Norway’s gambling act gives Norsk Tipping the sole right to provide citizens with gambling sites that include slots, table games and sports betting services. Norsk Tipping’s finances are also overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure that the profits are fairly distributed.

This means that Norway doesn’t allow private entities in and outside Norway to operate within the country. Under the current law, only Norsk Tipping and the Norsk Rikstoto Foundation can provide and advertise their gambling services.

Technically, off-shore casinos aren’t allowed to offer their services in Norway. However, the law doesn’t prevent Norwegians from using online casinos outside Norway. So, when it comes to online gambling laws in Norway, the rules aren’t clear and require attention.

Reformation of Gambling Laws in Norway

The European Commission is currently reviewing a new bill that could change the laws and legislation of Norway’s gambling regulations. The new act aims to unify the acts that are now in place. The reform also intends to introduce more clear-cut laws and regulations for gambling in Norway.

The bill will allow more online and offline gambling providers to offer their services through legal avenues. In this way, the country will have better control over its gambling industry. A new bill also has the potential to protect Norwegians from illegal casino operators.

Norwegians will benefit from higher income taxes and can monitor and prevent gambling addictions. Although the finer details of the bill aren’t precise, it seems like it could help Norwegian players and the gambling industry.

With the online gambling industry booming, it’s only fair that countries update their gambling regulations. By creating new bills with clear rules, players can enjoy protection from illegal betting sites.
