On Tuesday the 14th of February, Valentine’s Day, the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra will hold a special concert in the Marin Drzic Theatre.

At 7.00pm on Valentines Day the orchestra will be joined by the British conductor Colin Metters in what should be a magical evening. An evening of romance is planned with movie theme tunes, such as the music from Titanic, as well as Girl from Ipanema and Greensleves.

Entrance to the concert is free of charge however you will need to reserve your seat at the box-office of the theatre in advance and is organised by the Dubrovnik Tourist Board. Vocal group Sebenico from Sibenik is currently touring in the USA and according to their Facebook page, really having a great time in New York. They made ''ad hoc'' performance in Times Square singing ''Ballad of Sibenik''. People walking by seemed quite interested by this surprise concert and caught a chance to film it.

This vocal group is quite young, made back in 2011 and already won quite a few rewards. Maybe this performance will make them well-known on the American market.

One of the most popular rock bands these days is coming to Croatia! Kings of Leon were presented as the big surprise of the INmusic festival.

- With great pride we announce the concert of one of the greatest and most wanted rock bands today, endlessly adored – Kings of Leon! INmusic #12 becomes a host of the so far biggest performance in the region, where Kings of Leon will be joined also sensational Arcade Fire, Alt-J, Kasabian, Mixhael Kiwanuka and many others – it's written on the official Facebook page of the festival.

This will be the first concert of Kings of Leon in Croatia and the news made their Croatian fans (and those in the region) excited. But they'll need to wait for the concert until June, when the festival is held.

The new terminal of Dubrovnik Airport is open, well still a soft opening, and passengers and staff have a whole new experience. The spacious new terminal, Terminal C, will be fully functional by the beginning of May and will replace Terminal A for passenger departures.

This new terminal is connected to terminal B and when fully operational the two terminals will be completely joined, leaving terminal A as a baggage sorting area. With an impressive sixteen gates, two for internal flights, the airport will soon be able to handle more passengers.

Popular humanitarian race '5k' will be held as a part of Du Motion racing events this year again, along with the Dubrovnik Half Marathon. Money will be collected for Nevio Kresic, six year old from Konavle and the only person in Croatia diagnosed with Mayewski osteoplastic primordial dwarfism type two – disease he shares with only 50 people around the world. 

That's a disease that is characterized by short growth and frequent strokes, and people with this type of disease usually live up to 20 years old. Despite a rare disease of which very little is known about and struggle with frequent operations, Nevio shines the sincere kid's energy and courage at the first sight.

He won the hearts of Du Motion team as well and so they want, with the help of their runners, to help him walk through life easier.
Race for Nevia will be run on Sunday, April 30 from Stradun, around the Walls, to the Gruz Pool, back across Boninovo to Stradun, and its lenght is suitable for amateurs and beginners. Price entry fee is symbolic 60 kuna, and all registered runners will receive a commemorative 5K T-shirt and a medal.

Locals and their guests have already shown a big heart last year when they gathered more than 40 thousand kuna for the treatment of young Dubrovnik girl Karla Sentic.

At the 89th Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood which is to be held on the 26th of February, this year’s winners will be taking home the famous Oscar statuette manufactured by an American Croat.

For over 80 years, the Chicago cult company R.S. Owens & Co made the Oscar statuette, but last year the Academy selected Polich Tallix Fine Art Foundry from New York to make the famous statuette.

It is interesting to note that Dick Polich, the son of Croatian immigrants, is the founder and the owner of Polich Tallix Fine Art Foundry. Polich, originally Polic, is an 83-year-old graduate economist from Yale University and a graduate metallurgist from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His roots are from the small village of Zlobin near Rijeka.

Polich Tallix was among the first in the United States to offer technological expertise and industrial capabilities in metalworking, which had previously been only capable in Europe. Dick Polich has made thousands of sculptures in his career, and worked with more than five hundred artists.

Using a cast bronze Oscar from 1929, Polich Tallix artisans managed to restore subtle features of George Stanley’s original sculpture, which was based on sketches by MGM art director Cedric Gibbons. The overall size of the statuette remained the same. It takes Polich Tallix around 3 months to complete 50 Oscar statuettes required for the big night.

''The entry of foreign retail chains into the Croatian market hasn't resulted in cheaper goods on their shelves'', commented Tanja Popovic-Filipovic, the head of the Centre for Consumer Education and Information.

Popovic-Filipovic also warned that even though it is an open market retailers adjusted prices of their products and no one was willing to offer products that would be cheaper than products of other competitive retail chains.

''The only way to cheaper food products is through shortening the distribution chain i.e. to buy from small local producers'', explained Popovic-Filipovic.

According to a survey by Eurostat, in 2015 the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages in Croatia were still 9 percent below the average prices in the European Union.

However, the purchasing power of Croatian citizens is far more lower than in the rest of the EU. The average wage in the European Union is around 1,500 Euros, whilst in Croatia it is up to 740 Euros.

Supermarkets are the most profitable economic sector in Croatia; they recorded an annual growth of revenue by 4.5 percent in 2016.
