Cultural round-up of Croatia for the 2018/2019 season

Figures just released by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics have shown the light, or even the limelight, on the theatrical industry in Croatia. There were 176 theatres operating in Croatia in the 2018/2019 season. A part of professional theatres had permanent scenes at their disposal, either in-house ones or those located somewhere else. Therefore, along with 95 professional theatres, there were 10 permanent scenes operating. In addition, there were 30 professional children’s theatres, out of which there were 9 puppet theatres. There were also 51 amateur theatres operating.

A total of 12,614 plays were performed. The plays were attended by 2.27 million visitors. The average number of plays per professional theatre, including permanent scenes, was 72, while the average attendance per play was 206. Out of the total number of 1,930 plays performed in all theatres, there were 1,193 of them, or 61.8 percent, created by home-grown authors.

During the 2018/2019 season, there were 41 professional orchestras and ensembles operating who delivered reports, out of which 6 were symphony and large orchestras, 7 chamber orchestras and 28 chamber ensembles. There were 751 concerts, performances and festivities performed, attended by 266,074 visitors.
