The central annual exhibition of the Dubrovnik Museums "Orlando - symbol of freedom" in the Rector's Palace, that opened in September will stay open longer – until February 29th of 2020.
It is a project with which the Dubrovnik Museums contribute to the celebration of the "Orlando Year", proclaimed on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the erection of the Orlando Pillar in Dubrovnik. This is a continuation of the institution's central annual exhibition and publishing projects, which aim to brand Dubrovnik based on its cultural and historical heritage.
The project aims to raise awareness of the several meanings of the Orlando Pillar through a comprehensive understanding of its importance in the cultural and historical heritage of Dubrovnik and Croatia, as a component of European heritage.
The exhibition is conceived in several thematic units that deal with, among other things, the historical framework of the late 14th and early 15th centuries of the Republic of Dubrovnik in European political processes and the phenomenon of Orlando's appearance in Dubrovnik, its builders and artistic achievements in the context of Dubrovnik sculpture of the time, and also show the Orlando motif in European, Croatian and Dubrovnik literary and musical heritage.
