A rather special photo exhibition will open on the island of Korcula tomorrow entitled “The forgotten people of Korcula.” The black and white photos of the very first photographer from Korcula, Jakov Perucic, will go on display and the story behind the exhibition is fascinating. This exhibition and these photos very nearly didn’t see the light of day.
A few years ago Tonci Bazdaric, a local who is in love with Korcula’s rich history, walked past an old house that was waiting to be refurbished. He noticed some boxes outside on the street and an old wooden box with the logo of AGFA written on the side. As Tonci deals with photos he recognised the name of the company as a well-known developer of film and asked the workers if he could take the box. When he opened the box he had a moment that all historians long for, a treasure trove of old black and white photos all over a hundred years old. A whole cornucopia of life in Korcula for times long past. There were over 800 negatives in the box.
And tomorrow these very images will displayed on Korcula. All the images on display have been digitally reworked and give a unique insight into life on the island all those decades ago.
The exhibition, “The forgotten people of Korcula” opens tomorrow the 12th of June at 8:00 pm in the Korcula Culture Centre.
