The visual identity of the 70th Dubrovnik Summer Festival, which will be held from July 10th to August 25th on almost twenty scenic and ambient locations of the city of Dubrovnik, is made by Orsat Frankovic and Ana Opalic. The starting point of the artists is in conceptualizing the solution to the issue of public space as a stage, which was a thematic framework set by the artistic leadership of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
As a set of open spaces in the City tissue, the public space provokes tensions and conflicts of opposite ideas and interests. It has bipolar nature, at the same time real and impenetrable, public and inaccessible, monumental and provincial, everybody’s, anybody’s, no one’s... In function of the scene or life, space is a common resource to which we give collective meanings. The solution of visual identity and posters opens the issue of these meanings.
- We came back as observers to some of the mythical stage sites of the Festival. Knowing that we are returning to each other being different every time, we have produced new photos of these places, witnessing the time we live in and the circumstances that determine us. By changing the vision and minimal light interventions, the familiar, seemingly vacant spaces release the burdens of previous meanings and open up new possibilities in their perception, moving from memory space to the new potential. In the desire to move away from the usual or expected choice of typography, we have reached for non-traditional solutions. Turning the logo upside down, next to anniversary printing, ultimately suggests our answer to the question whether it should be a commemorative celebration or a chance for a new beginning - authors Orsat Frankovic and Ana Opalic wrote.
The program of the 70th Dubrovnik Summer Festival will be presented on February 2nd.
